Norway 1989

This was my first trip overseas! Not long out of college, still settling into a new job and in the process of buying a house, I left all my worries behind to fly Scandanavian Air (still probably the best airline experience I've ever had) to the land of Thor and Odin, Freya and Hel, and of course Loki....

My reason for this journey was my bestest of all friends, Tommy, who was studying for a year in Norway. Granted, he didn't actually spend much time in the cities he was SUPPOSED to be in, but he had fun, and I certainly did, too!

Now, let's get on with the thumbnails. You know the drill, click on an image to see it BIG.

bergen Forget Seattle. You want a rainy city? This is it: Bergen! But OH, what a great way to get my first glimpse of Europe!
Squint through the mists of this forest outside of Bergen, and see in the distance an ancient Viking stave church. We're talking atmosphere!! church1
church2 A close-up shot of the misty church above. I'm sad to report that arsonists have since destroyed this historic treasure.
My friend, Tommy, as he looked in 1989. Precisely, this is how he looked in a Bergen breadshop while preparing to dine on an open-faced sandwich of fresh shrimp, just purchased outside along the harbour from a cheery fisherman. Tommy
fjord1 Cruising down the fjords and fiddly bits of Norway ... this is a beautiful country!
Same day, same fjord, different view of a wee fjordside village. fjord2
fjord3 This trip, cold as it was, was over too soon. Then we were off to the nearest town to catch a train back to Bergen.
The bridge in the Gustav Vigeland Sculpture Park, in Oslo. park1
park Vigeland's fountain. This Norwegian sculptor left some very impressive work as his legacy!
Look! That's me, hitting the slopes near Grong, north of Trondheim! (I have NEVER set foot on a ski slope since.) skiboy
church3 Not happy with your earlier peek at the Viking church? Well, here's a clear and sunny close-up ... not of that one, actually, but another one in a folk park near Oslo.
